About the Journal

The Journal of Mathematical Philosophy (JMP) is an open access journal publishing research in all areas of mathematical philosophy, broadly understood.

The journal was founded at the Munich Center for Mathematical Philosophy (MCMP) at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München. It grew out of a concern that open access publishing is still difficult for many authors and institutions due to high article processing charges. JMP aims to contribute to a solution for this problem. It is free to read and free to publish in: there are no subscription fees for readers and no article processing charges for authors.

The journal operates double-anonymous peer review and uses the LaTeX-based workflow described in our submission guidelines. Articles are published continuously as they are accepted.

We aim for a fast submission pipeline. New submissions are sent to review or desk rejected quickly, typically within three weeks. Submission are quickly published after acceptance.

Aims and scope

The Journal of Mathematical Philosophy publishes research articles in mathematical philosophy. By “mathematical philosophy” we mean philosophical work that draws on formal and mathematical methods, together with philosophical inquiry into those methods and their foundations. Subject areas include, but are not limited to:

  • Philosophy of mathematics

Diamond open access

JMP is a diamond open access journal. This means:

  • Free for readers. All articles are available to anyone, anywhere, at no cost and without a subscription.
  • Free for authors. There are no submission fees and no article processing charges (APCs).

We achieve this in part by reducing costs related to copy-editing and formatting. Authors are required to use the journal's LaTeX template. Remaining costs are covered by the Faculty of Philosophy at LMU. The journal's website is maintained by the university library of LMU.

Authors retain copyright in their work, and articles are published under a Creative Commons license.

Peer review

JMP uses a double-anonymous peer review process. Manuscripts must be anonymized before submission, and attempting to identify the author of a submission is prohibited.

Each submission is assigned by the Editors-in-chief to an Associate Editor with relevant expertise. The Associate Editor then reads the manuscript and may reject it without external review if acceptance is unlikely. An editorial decision to reject should be made within three weeks after submission.

After editorial review the manuscript is sent to external referees, ordinarily two. Referees recommend one of three outcomes — accept, revisions, or reject — and justify the recommendation. Decisions after external review are at the sole discretion of the Associate Editor.

Editors and referees must declare any conflict of interest, in which case the manuscript is reassigned. All manuscripts under review are treated as confidential, and concerns about plagiarism or other misconduct are referred to the Editors-in-chief.

Publishing model

Articles are published continuously as they are accepted. The journal uses the publication platform Open Journal Systems.

Founding

The Journal of Mathematical Philosophy was founded in 2026 by Jürgen Landes and Lennart Ackermans at the Munich Center for Mathematical Philosophy.
